It’s great to have dreams and set goals. That’s what makes life progressive. Without setting and achieving goals, life will be no different from a stagnant water. However, while setting goals, it’s imperative that one is clear about why a goal is important and is even worth achieving in the first place. A lot of people set goals and after spending time, energy and resources in achieving the goals, they end up finding out it wasn’t really worth the sacrifice. The taste they anticipated wasn’t there anymore after achieving the goal. This is why I see the need to share with you the importance of clarity in goal setting.
Things to put aright before setting a goal
Your life’s vision and mission
You need to understand where you’re really headed in life, what future you are seeing for yourself and what you want your life to stand for. Is that goal in alignment with the future you see? Does it alight with your life mission? You need to get all of these clear.
Your core values
Before setting a goal, you need to ask yourself whether what it takes to achieve goes in line with your core values or contradict them. You need to be sure. The reason is, if you eventually have to contradict your core values, you may end up achieving the goal only to have lost the taste of success in it.
You need to know what’s there to gain
Before setting a goal, you need to have something motivating you. What is there to gain? Is it just that people will clap for you? What’s the trophy at the end of the race? How important is it? Why is worth the sacrifice? What do you become by achieving that goal? These are questions you need to ask yourself. And getting an answer to these questions always give you more energy to go for it. As a matter of fact, those with answers to questions like these have greater odds of success in life.
Before setting SMART goals, gain clarity. SMART goals don’t always automatically translate into successful life. Clarity is what does that. In all your getting, get clarity before embarking on a goal. When a man has a BIG picture, goals are easier to set and achieve because everything adds up. Everything you spend your time and energy on should add up to a BIG picture. A reasonable goal is not just for a transient purpose. There must be a BIG picture in mind. I remain your clarity coach and your clarity remains my priority.
